How to start a blog in Kenya.

Starting a blog can be a daunting task. Especially when you have no idea where to start. a mug, keyboard and two monitors on a white table#blogging Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate these new blogging waters. All the best and feel free to leave any blogging questions that you have.

Step 1: Pick a niche for your blog.

A niche is a specific topic that you will be writing about. For example, for financialbuddyblog the niche is personal finance.

How to pick a niche-

  1. pick something that you are passionate and knowledgeable about.

Picking something that you are passionate about will ensure that you won’t be easily burnt out. People tend to get bored when they do something that they don’t like for long.

  1. Research about your ideal niche. Check to see whether it is profitable. For example, you can’t choose weather as your niche because not many people search for it on search engines like google.

A mentor of mine once wrote that your blog is not a public personal diary. It might sound harsh but it is true. remember that it is not about you, it is about your readers.

  1. Do keyword research to get ideas about your niche. Even better you will get ideas about what to write.

ii) Pick a name ( domain name) for your blog.

When picking a name for your blog keep in mind the industry and niche you are writing about. Keep it simple and easy to remember as well.

Most bloggers use their personal names because they are unique to the brand they are building. Plus their names are a reflection of the brand they are trying to build.

Create a tagline

A tagline is your slogan. For example, for this blog, the tagline is your guide to financial freedom. Choose something catchy.

Step 2: Get hosting.

This is a very important step. This is because you can’t make money on a free blog. That means that when you acquire hosting, the blog will belong to you. Hence you will be free to make money with it using various forms like placing ads.

Hosting enables your content to be available on the internet. That means that all your content will be in one location and anyone can see it. This is a good thing. Because the more people that see your work the more you can make.

I chose Host Pinnacle, a hosting provider in Kenya because it was affordable(it costs less than sh.2,000 per year to start and run the blog), I could pay via M-Pesa and they have 24/7 customer care service. This is good because back then I wasn’t tech-savvy at all.

Sounds like an advert doesn’t it, I’m recommending host pinnacle because I have been using their services for the last two years. In my opinion, they are the best. Check them out here.

Step 3:Download word press.

WordPress is a content management system(CMS) that will enable you to create, manage and edit or modify your blog articles on your website.

You might not know this but you can start your blog on your smartphone. I did and it worked out well until I got a laptop. To do this simply go to Play Store on your android smartphone and search for WordPress. Then download and install the app.

After installing the app fill in the required fields. These fields include your domain name, username, tagline, and email. Then create a password for your blog.

Step 4: Choose a theme from word press.

There are thousands of free themes on word press. As a beginner, it is advisable to pick a free theme for now.

To pick a free theme on your word press dashboard, go to appearance then themes. Choose any theme, you can even preview the theme before deciding which one suits your taste.

After installing the theme and customizing it, don’t forget to delete the hello message. This is a dead giveaway for most newbies. And we want to look like professionals.

Step 5: Design your logo.

You can use Canva to create your site’s logo and other graphics.

Step 6: Pages required.

For now, you’ll need an about me page and a contact me page.

An about me page describes who you are and what you intend to do with the blog.

A contact me page is simply a form for your visitors to get in touch with you.

On that note make youtube your go-to guide. If you get stuck on a step, just search or leave a comment below and I’ll help you. These six steps are simple but crucial as you start your blogging journey. Stay tuned for another piece on getting your blog monetized. Happy blogging bloggers.
